REDWOOD CITY, CA (March 10, 2020) — Carrot Inc. has been named to Fast Company’s prestigious annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2020. The list honors the businesses making the most profound impact on both industry and culture, showcasing a variety of ways to thrive in today’s fast-changing world. This year’s MIC list features businesses from 39 countries.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the most innovative wellness companies in the world,” said Founder and CEO David Utley, M.D. “This award further validates that our innovative technology is effectively helping people quit tobacco, reinforcing the Carrot mission to drive real social change and improve the health of millions of people.”

Worldwide more than one billion people smoke cigarettes, making smoking the leading cause of preventable illness, death, and health care costs.1 Yet despite advances in healthcare, mobile technology, wearable sensors, and medical devices, it has been over a decade since there was a breakthrough to help people quit smoking. This changed when Carrot Inc. released Pivot: an evidence-based, mobile, smoking cessation program that includes an FDA-cleared carbon monoxide breath sensor (quantifying smoking behavior), a mobile app, behavioral counseling, pharmacotherapy, community support, motivational lessons, and a clear road map to help people quit smoking.

Pivot is a breakthrough not only because it is the first FDA-cleared breath sensor that provides people who smoke with real-time insights into their carbon monoxide levels, but because clinical trials such as the 2019 study in the Journal of Medical Internet Research (JMIR) show that Pivot actually motivates people who smoke to finally quit. In fact, 85% of participants who completed the study indicated that Pivot increased their motivation to quit, and nearly 1 in 3 achieved a successful quit.2

Part of the reason Pivot is successful at helping people quit smoking is because the platform is rooted in behavioral science called self-determination theory. Unlike traditional smoking cessation programs that only allow participants who set a quit date, Pivot accepts, motivates and supports all people who smoke – those who are ready to quit, and those who are not.

The World’s Most Innovative Companies is Fast Company’s signature franchise is one of its most highly anticipated editorial efforts of the year. It provides both a snapshot and a road map for the future of innovation across the most dynamic sectors of the economy.

“At a time of increasing global volatility, this year’s list showcases the resilience and optimism of businesses across the world. These companies are applying creativity to solve challenges within their industries and far beyond,” said Fast Company senior editor Amy Farley, who oversaw the issue with deputy editor David Lidsky.

Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies issue (March/April 2020) is now available online at, as well as in app form via iTunes and on newsstands beginning March 17, 2020. The hashtag is #FCMostInnovative.
